Free PHP Script: Personalized Short URL Generator

29 October 2011

Some examples of free hosted services for short urls are moourl.com and bitly.com. But making them personalized = so much cooler.

For example, if you go to r.osey.me/s/google, you will be redirected to google.com. If you go to r.osey.me/s/twitter, twitter.com

Not only that, but you get to keep track of how many people are clicking on these links:

Soo… I created one. And you can download it.

It’s super simple – only a couple of php files need to be uploaded, plus some css files to make it pretty :)

I tried to make the install as simple as possible – you don’t need to edit any php files at all, just enter your database information into an installation form and you’re good to go!

More detailed instructions

  1. Create a mysql database (or you can use an existing one)
  2. Upload the contents of the zipped file to a folder on your website. Important: Make sure that these files are in their OWN FOLDER. They don’t like to share!! I used /s/
  3. Go to yoururl.com/shorturllocation (in my case r.osey.me/s/)
  4. Fill out the installation form.
  5. Delete install.php
  6. Now you can go ahead to the admin panel and start adding your short urls!

I’m still working on the kinks of the backend of my website but I’d like to give this a try once I’m done. Thanks for creating one! :D
